A Prayer for Our Soldiers

by Rabbi Eliezer Melamed

"O God, do not hold your peace..."

All of us are praying for the success of our soldiers, who are fighting with bravery for the defense of the nation and
They are being required to fix everything that past governments damaged.
the land. The appropriate chapter right now for prayer is psalm 83 in the Book of Psalms, which includes a prayer for victory and revenge against the wicked who rise up to destroy us:

A poem, a psalm of Asaf. Do not keep silent, O God: do not hold your peace, and be still, O God. For lo, your enemies make a tumult: and they who hate you have lifted up their head. They take crafty counsel against your people and consult against your hidden ones. They have said, Come and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.... O my God, make them like the whirling chaff; like the stubble before the wind. As the fire burns a wood and as the flame sets the mountains on fire, so pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your storm. Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek your name, O Lord. Let them be confounded and frightened forever; and let them be put to shame and perish: that men may know that You alone, whose name is the Lord, are the most high over all the Earth.

The Virtue of the Soldiers and the Disgrace of the Government
One cannot imagine the virtue of the soldiers who are putting their lives on the line for their nation and homeland. In going out to battle with self-sacrifice for the general public, they are elevated to the supreme level of the holiness of klal Yisrael, and only "holiness" can be said of them.

They are being required to fix everything that past governments damaged. We warned that this would happen, and here it is. Instead of admitting the truth - that they erred in the retreat, in the expulsion, in giving weapons to the enemy - the politicians continue their same old lines. Since this is the case, it is reasonable to assume that they will lose the majority of profit that could have been achieved from this war. If only we would hear from them words of reckoning and repentance.

The Retreats are the Source of Calamity
In order to slightly improve the chances of achieving more from this war, we must now speak publicly. The situation of our nation has deteriorated as a result of attempts to satisfy the enemy, to achieve peace and security through retreats, and by giving status to our enemies in parts of the land of Israel. On the contrary, the more we involve ourselves with settling the land, and talk about our rights to all of the land, our security will increase.

From the time of the Oslo Accords until today, our security situation has deteriorated; in fact, it already began from the time of Camp David. Indeed, there isn’t a war with Egypt, but she is one of our most bitter enemies in every international forum. Only because Iran and Syria initiate terror more actively, does it seem to many people that Egypt is not an enemy. However, Egypt was behind all of the terrorist attacks that the PLO initiated from Oslo onwards. Also, the large amount of weapons that reached Hamas were passed quietly through Egypt. They are able to prevent weapons smuggling throughout all of the vast land of Egypt; only in the Gaza Strip they can’t prevent it?

Contrary to the Camp David Agreements, Egypt has doubled and tripled the military forces that they were allowed to deploy in the Sinai; and this, seemingly, to prevent weapons smuggling. They did not prevent anything. Tens of thousands of weapons and missiles were smuggled through their territory into the Gaza Strip.

As long as the present leadership does not recognize its mistakes, there is no chance that true quiet will prevail within our borders.

An Obligatory War
Despite the weak and failing leadership, the current war is obligatory. Despite the heavy fear that the self-sacrifice of the soldiers will not be translated into true achievements - the war itself against the enemies of Israel is a mitzvah. For even though the government is mistaken in many things, its fundamental goal is to defend the nation. This is the motivation to go to war. And even limited achievements for the security of Israel saves lives, at the very least, for the short term.

Indeed, we could have achieved these limited goals by just bombing from the air; however, from the moment the
The war itself against the enemies of Israel is a mitzvah.
government decided to go to war on land, it is an obligation and mitzvah for every soldier that receives a command to go to war against the enemy. This is the authority of the government to decree war. And we must thank God that we merited to have a state and a government, and that we can fight for our lives. Even though we have mistaken leaders, when we were in the Diaspora and didn’t have a state or mistaken leaders, our security situation was incomparably worse.

Is it Appropriate to Criticize the Government at a Time of War?
Question: Don’t the words of criticism of the honorable rabbi in your columns weaken the spirit of the nation and hurt the motivation of the soldiers?

Answer: All the media is filled with commentators who speak about the war, examining its developments, weighing its chances and dangers, and analyzing the potential results. We are the only ones who are asked to be silent, or perhaps to even sing songs of praise about the spirit of bravery that suddenly befell our leaders before the elections.

On the contrary, we must speak our peace more than anyone else. Behold, it has become clear that our forecasts were more correct. In comparison to all the famous commentators, whose forecasts are almost always wrong, we were right; our assumptions were correct. Do we have to be silent and modest? Our moral obligation is to make our voices heard, to try to save Israel from the false and deceiving prophets who promise the nation peace now, but in fact bring terrorist attacks and expulsions, and also increase ten thousand fold the Arab hate towards us.

Now is not the time to explain the great benefit stemming from this criticism, which reaches the very top-level security sources. I will only point out that in the merit of this criticism, in the present operation our soldiers’ lives are being less endangered for the sake of not harming the enemy population. And a hint is enough for a wise person. God willing, thanks to the criticism the results of the war will also be better.
