Op-Ed: Don’t Throw Pamela Geller Under the Bus (Ads)
Paul Schnee, ZOA, LAThe writer is President of the Zionist Organization of America, Los Angeles Chapter.
It’s a story that no mainstream Jewish newspaper has covered in depth, but which other members of the media have seized to make a heroic Jew and Israel look bad.
I’m talking about the pro-Israel ad campaign of the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), which began running ads this month in New York and San Francisco.
In an unprecedented move, public officials and media are going out of their way to repudiate the messages of the advertisements and to malign Pamela Geller, director of the AFDI.
In San Francisco, the AFDI advertisements say:
“In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat jihad.”
In New York, the AFDI advertisements say:
*19,250 deadly Islamic attacks since 9/11/01. *And counting. It’s not Islamophobia, it’s Islamorealism.”
The AFDI is correct in pointing out that the wars in the Middle East are essentially a clash between civilization and barbarism, between the freedom-loving West and anti-Western, theocratic, and brutal Islamist supremacist regimes that seek to destroy Israel and murder innocent civilians, both Jews and Muslims alike.
In its advertisement, the AFDI does not hold culpable all of Islam or all Muslims; it calls attention to acts of savagery committed in the name of jihad, the Islamic term for the “struggle” to spread Islam globally by violence and subjugation. (Islamist apologetics deceptively define jihad as “inner struggle.”)
Islamic supremacists subjugate women, gleefully hang homosexuals, persecute non-Muslim minorities and glorify terrorist killers.
Ms. Geller correctly points out that a war on innocent civilians is savagery, and this has been the modus operandi of the Islamists supremacists in their assaults against Israel and the Jews, including the Islamic terrorist organization Hamas and also the Palestinian Authority, which poses as “moderate” while providing diplomatic cover for the terrorists.
The countless assaults against innocent civilians, such as the most recent suicide bombing of women and children on a bus in Bulgaria, and the incessant, indiscriminate rocket attacks on Southern Israel from Gaza are acts of savagery. This should be obvious and give cause for alarm even to the slowest of minds.
How is it possible for any sentient person or organization to align themselves with such grotesque people?
But some have. The city of San Francisco has decided to place a disclaimer beside the AFDI’s advertisements, essentially enforcing Sharia Law that bans criticism of Islam. It reads:
"SFMTA Policy Prohibits Discrimination Based On National Origin, Religion and Other Characteristics and Condemns Statements That Describe Any Group As Savages."
If people who regularly commit these kinds of atrocities are not savages, then what are they exactly?
By posting such a notice beside pro-Israel ads, but remaining silent on anti-Israel ads, San Francisco has clearly taken a side against Israel, America's greatest ally in the Middle East, and offers tacit support to the genocidal Islamic terrorists whose undiminished goal is Israel’s extinction.
The San Francisco Metro Transit Authority should take note of Thomas Mann's observation that, ‘tolerance is a crime when applied to evil.' "
In New York, Town Supervisor Paul Feiner announced that he wanted Metro-North to warn passengers that the ads could be upsetting and don’t represent Metro-North’s views or that of the community. However, the silence of public officials was deafening when pro-Arab groups ran advertisements maligning Israel and falsely accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing.
If it were not for double standards, Mr. Feiner would not have any standards at all. Mr. Feiner has essentially taken sides and provided sanction for terrorist attacks against Jews. He did not speak up for Israel and the Jews, but said, “[Muslims] should not be discriminated against. The posters encourage hatred, discrimination and do not help the efforts to fight hate crimes.” Really?
The next time an Islamic bomber tries to blow up Times Square, to whom will Mr. Feiner's concern against discrimination be directed?
By implying that all Muslims support jihad, both the city of San Francisco and Mr. Feiner are the ones who actually characterized all Muslims as jihadists.
But I’m sure I speak for many members of the public when I thank Ms. Geller for her efforts in courageously defying political correctness and speaking the truth about the nature of both Israel and America’s religiously inspired enemies, who are glad to tell us how much they hate us and want to destroy us. They don't even bother to hide it.
There is no moral equivalency between those who wish to destroy the state of Israel and those trying to defend her, None at all! The San Francisco Metro Transit Authority should take note of Thomas Mann's observation that, ‘tolerance is a crime when applied to evil.' "
The inability, or worse still the cold reluctance, of officials to distinguish between the fire department and the fire is the hallmark of the appeaser. On behalf of the ZOA Los Angeles chapter, I call upon the city of San Francisco to remove the bigoted disclaimer next to the American Freedom Defense Initiative’s advertisement and urge N.Y. Town Supervisor Feiner to direct his outrage where it really belongs: against Islamic attacks of savagery committed all too frequently against America and her great intrepid ally, Israel--or hasn't he noticed?
