The death toll from an earthquake that struck central Italy early Wednesday morning has risen to 290 people, civil defense officials said Thursday.

The quake, which was felt as far as Rome, devastated towns near its epicenter, some 70 miles northeast of the capital.

Aftershocks rattled central Italy on Saturday, with some as powerful as 4.2 on the Richter Scale.

Roughly 400 people have been reported injured, with still more, including children, unaccounted for and potentially buried under the rubble of toppled buildings. Rescue workers continue to race against the clock, in hopes that some buried underneath the debris may still be alive.

Italy's President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi joined mourners at a state funeral on Saturday for 35 victims of the devastating quake in the town of Ascoli Piceno.

The 6.2 magnitude earthquake had more than 250 aftershocks, the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported.
